Panampilly Memorial Government College
Panampilly Memorial Government College, ideally situated on the banks of Chalakudy river, en route to Athirappilly and Vazhachal waterfalls, lies nestled in simple pride enjoying the rich abundance of nature’s splendour. Far away from the madding crowd, the cool breeze that comes with a touch of warmth and purity gently rouses dedicated effort and focused attention. The college stands on 25 acres of virgin land – 15 acres for the main campus, 5 acres for accommodation facilities, and 5 acres for sports and games. It proudly allows 5 cents of land of working space to every student which is a rare luxury.
Panampilly Memorial Government College, Chalakudy, established in 1975, is wholly owned and managed by the Government of Kerala. It offers Undergraduate and Post Graduate programmes in four branches of learning such as Commerce, Economics, Mathematics and Politics. The college and its academic programmes are affiliated to the University of Calicut. The college is also recognized by the University Grants Commission, and included in 2(f) and 12(B). It is accredited by NAAC, Bangalore at ‘B’ Grade on four point scale.
Two main academic blocks, an auditorium, a library and a canteen on the main campus offer a lot of state-of-the-art facilities for research oriented learning. A richly stacked library, computer and language labs, inflibnet, high speed internet, and Satellite Interactive Terminal are among the numerous modern facilities available at the college.
The academic odyssey of the students does not end with university examinations. The years that have gone by bear testimony to the cultural caliber of the students of the college. The venues of university youth festivals often reverberate with the name of ‘Panampilly’. The activities of our students are not restricted to the four walls of the classrooms. With utmost care, they gently nurture a herbal garden. They go out into the village around and engage themselves in out-reach programmes by facilitating the much-needed succor to the needy and the poor.
Teachers are an excellent lot, ready to work day in and day out. Many of them are actively engaged in the production of new knowledge. The college is proud of the many publications by its faculties. A good number of teachers are on the university’s academic bodies, ensuring a strong and healthy rapport with the university. In this way, the college is also able to play a major role in the quality enhancement aspect of the university in general, and the college in particular.
The college also maintains good relationships with the Member of Parliament, MLA, the Municipal Chairman and the ward councilors. A few of our departments have strong linkage with industry. The alumni of the college are everywhere in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, America and Australia. Many of them are pursuing higher learning in centres of excellence at the national level.

Chalakudy is a small municipal town in the south of Thrissur District in central Kerala. It is geographically positioned at 22 km towards north from Kochi International Airport connected by the four-lane National Highway 47. It has a population of about 50,000, with an average literacy of more than 90%. It has two public funded institutions of higher education – Panampilly Memorial Government College and Sacred Heart College (for women), 7 km from each other. Widely known tourist destinations such as Athirappilly Waterfalls and Vazhachal Cascades are 30 km from here. Thrissur Vadakkunnathan Temple, the cradle of Thrissur Pooram, is only 30 kms away. Water theme parks such as Silver Storm and Dream World are closer. The landscape of the area commands a picturesque panoramic view. The terrain comprises a rich diversity of land types such as mountains, hills, forests, rivers, dams, reservoirs, canals, plains, and fields. Demographically too, Chalakudy is a good specimen of “god’s plenty” – every shade of the vast Hindu spectrum, adivasis, Christians and Muslims – all live in perfect harmony, a microcosm of the great Indian unity in diversity.
Panampilly Memorial Government College, Chalakudy, was started in 1975. It marked the fulfillment of a long cherished aspiration of the people of this semi urban highland geographical entity. The college is situated at Potta, 6 km away from Chalakudy town. It is named after the late Panampilly Govinda Menon, an illustrious son of Kerala. Born in 1908, Panampilly (as he was dearly called) was a statesman and politician of subtle and mature judgment, a diplomat and orator. He had a glorious political career at the state and the national levels. As a tribute to his brilliant political career in the state, he became the Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Travancore and Cochin. At the national level, Panampilly was a Minister of State for Food initially, and then he rose to become the Cabinet Minister for Law and Social Welfare in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet in 1967. He is also known to have been instrumental in the nationalization of banks.
The College Coat of Arms was approved by the Director of Collegiate Education vide letter No. F-13370/77/K. data:text/mce-internal,Dis., dated 26th March 1977.
The logo is circular in shape, with the name ‘Panampilly Memorial Govt. College, Chalakudy’ written in English in the outer circle. The inner circle depicts an open book on which is reflected a human head, which symbolizes a person acquiring knowledge.
The motto of the College “Sradhavan Labhate Gnanam” (श्रद्धावान् लभते ज्ञानम्) is written in Devanagiri script above the book in the inner circle. The verse, quoted from Bhagavad Gita: 4.39, may be translated as follows: “The one who is full of faith, who is devoted to it, and has subdued the senses, obtains Knowledge (i.e., the diligent acquires knowledge).”

The college and all its Undergraduate and Post Graduate Programmes are affiliated to the University of Calicut in Kerala. Originally, the college had been granted affiliation as a Junior College by the University of Calicut on June 27, 1975.
The college has been recognised by UGC, and included in the list of institutions eligible to receive Central assistance as per Section 2 (f) & 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 vide letter No. F.8-28/2002 (CPP-I) dated Dec 05, 2003 of the Under Secretary, University Grants Commission, New Delhi-110002.

Panampilly Memorial Government College, Chalakudy has been assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore (an Autonomous Institute of the University Grants Commission) in March 2015 with CGPA of 2.66 on four point scale at ‘B’ Grade. The accreditation is valid upto March 02, 2020.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Panampilly Memorial Government College was established in 2008 in pursuance of the NAAC policy that every accredited institution should establish an IQAC. At PMGC, the IQAC takes care of the performance evaluation, assessment and accreditation and quality upgradation of the college. The IQAC is also responsible for ensuring the post-accreditation quality sustenance of the institution. Since quality enhancement is a continuous process, the IQAC has become a part of the institution’s system. It works towards realising the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. It is engaged in the deliberate task of developing a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of the college.
The IQAC at PMGC also makes a significant and meaningful contribution in the postaccreditation phase. During the post-accreditation period of the college since March 2009, the IQAC has endeavoured to channelize the efforts and measures of the college towards academic excellence.

POST ACCREDITATION INITIATIVES
Development initiatives at the college have been at a much faster pace in the post
accreditation era. There has been remarkable improvement in every aspect which has
helped the institution to stand on terra firma with its head raised high among the HEIs in
1. Quality of educational services offered by the institution has improved. New
programmes are being added. The departmental activities have been brought under
a transparent system which is being updated and perfected by every passing day.
The atmosphere is filled the buzz of workshops, seminars, invited lectures, and
visit of international and national level experts.
2. Drop-out rate is minimal, and the performance of the students in the exams is
commendable. A fairly good number of students clear NET and JRF consistently.
Graduates of the college are selected by centres of excellence such as IIT Mumbai.
3. Skill development programmes are pursued with dedication. Initiatives such as
Coaching for entry into service, and Remedial classes are integral part of the

5. The quality of dissemination of knowledge has improved a lot. The college is good
example of a perfect mix of experience and energy, a brilliant spectrum of old age
and youthfulness. More than 30% of the teachers are PhD holders. Many more are
pursuing part time research. A large number of teachers are busy with UGC-MRPs.
Sufficient teaching posts have been created and postings made. The number of
guest lecturers is negligibly low.
6. Infrastructure facilities are well developed. Assistance flows in from sources such
as MLA, state government, and UGC. New books were purchased, e-journals made
available, automation installed, Internet came with lightning speed, laptops and
PCs queued up, smart boards flashed on walls, and seminar hall and auditorium
worked miracles. The image of the college is undergoing a sea change with
reflecting floors and new shades on walls.
7. Cultural activities have scaled new heights at the zonal, inter-zonal and south zone
levels. Laurels keep flowing in. There is an upsurge of vigour and enthusiasm, all
this owing to the well designed master plan charted out with the active
involvement of students, teachers, staff, parents and the community. A system is in
place, and the graph-line of cultural awakening keeps soaring.
8. Extension activities are taken up at departmental level. Training in language skills
are given to the socially disadvantaged groups. Tie-ups are established with LSGs
and community linkages formed. NSS concentrates on agriculture, new farming
methods, housing schemes for the homeless, empowerment of the marginalised,
community services, palliative care, blood bank, human rights and other issues.
Hence the best NSS Unit and PO.
9. Organic farming, green campus, herbal garden, natural virgin coppice, no-plastic,
renewable energy, waste disposal, campus beautification – a classic example of the
other side of an HEI.
10. Development of advanced level sports infrastructure has redrawn the contours of
the institution. The basketball court on the campus has hosted zonal tournaments.
The five-acre virgin terrain in front of the college has transformed into a modern
sports facility with a football ground, and the basic physical infrastructure for an
indoor stadium conforming to international standards, thanks to the efforts of Sri
BD Devassy MLA who harnessed Rs.3.5 crore from the state government for the

prime spot in the galaxy of state’s HEI’s.
The Right to Information Act, 2005 has been enacted by the Parliament and has come into force from June 15, 2005.
